The McKinney Lions Varsity Basketball squad defeated Sachse in its season opener 55-31 Tuesday night at the MHS gymnasium. McKinney jumped out to a 16-4 lead, led by ten points from G.J. Vilarino. The lead was extended to 30-14 at halftime, but the Lions saw their lead dwindle to 12 late in the third quarter. The defensive pressure proved to be the biggest weapon for the home squad, who gathered 10 steals, 9 pass deflections, and limited the Mustangs to 7 offensive rebounds. Vilarino's 20 points led the way for MHS, while Joe Holley added 12 (plus 8 rebounds), and Andy Lalumandier (8 points) and Beau Smith (6 points) aided the cause. The Lions (1-0) will travel to Hebron to take on the Hawks Friday night.
